Kinds of Tawaf
There are seven different kinds of Tawaf.
- Tawaf-e-Umrah: -
- This Tawaf is essential and an obligatory part of Umrah.
- Tawaf-e-Qudoom: -

(Circumambulating upon arrival). It is the official way of greeting Ka`aba instead of the usual prayer (Salat) of two Rakats which is performed upon entering any mosque. It is ordained by Holy Prophet (PBUH) that Tawaf-e-Qudoom is Sunnah for all those coming from far off (outside the limits of Meeqat) with the intention of performing Hajj-e-Ifrad or Qiran. But is not compulsory for one coming with the intention of Hajj-e-Tamatto or for Umrah.
- Tawaf-e-Ziyyarah: -
(also known as Tawaf-e-Ifadah). This Tawaf is one of the fundamentals or essential parts of Hajj. The rites of Hajj are not completed if one leave it or forget. This Tawaf is performed from the morning of 10th ZilHijj to the sunset of 12th ZilHijj. It has to be performed even if delayed but with the immolation (Dum) of an animal. Generally this Tawaf is performed on the day of sacrifice (1) after stoning the Great pillar (2) the immolation (Nahar) and (3) after shaving of head or symbolic cutting of hairs.
- Tawaf al-Wida: -
(Farewell Tawaf). It is duty for every pilgrim coming either for Hajj or Umrah to bid farewell to the Ka`abah before leaving Mak`kah for Madina or for home. After performing this Tawaf the pilgrim must walk backwards as a sign of veneration (this gesture is obligatory)
- Tawaf-e-Nazar: -
- (offering) It falls due when someone woe for any worldly affair.
- Tawaf-al-Tahiyyah: -
- This Tawaf is desirable when one enters the sacred mosque. But if one performed any other Tawaf, that will become its substitute.
Nafli Tawaf: -
(optional) Tawaf is a prayer that can be performed only in Mak`kah and no where else in the world. Its excellence is unmatched that may even be an optional (Nafli) Tawaf. It is therefore advised that one should perform as much Nafli Tawaf as he can in the available time after Umrah or fulfillment of Hajj rites. Some people prefer to perform many numbers of Umrah. There is no harm in it but it is preferable and desirable to perform much of Tawaf. Performance of an Umrah takes more time and in that much time one can perform several optional Tawaf.
